MOROCCO DECLARED WINNERS OF AFCON 2025 WITH CAF STRIPPING SENEGAL OF TITLE
In a surprising development, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Appeals Committee has ruled that Morocco is the rightful champion of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025. This decision comes after Senegal was deemed to have forfeited the final match, which took place in Morocco. As a result, Morocco has been awarded an administrative victory, finalizing the score at 3-0 in their favor.
This verdict reversed the earlier ruling from the Disciplinary Committee, following an appeal made by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF). The Appeals Committee invoked articles 82 and 84 of the AFCON regulations to justify their severe penalty against the Senegalese national team, citing misconduct during the event.
On January 18, during the high-stakes final held in Rabat, Senegal had initially secured a 1-0 victory after a tumultuous match. The game, however, was marred by controversies, including a penalty awarded to Morocco during stoppage time after Senegal had a goal disallowed. Tensions escalated when several Senegalese players left the pitch briefly, with supporters attempting to invade the field, leading to objects being thrown onto it.
Moroccan winger Brahim Diaz missed the crucial penalty, which resulted in extra time, ultimately allowing Senegal to claim victory with a goal from Pape Gueye.
Response from Morocco’s Federation
Following the CAF’s decision, the Moroccan football federation issued a press release acknowledging the Appeals Commission’s ruling. In their statement, they clarified that their intention was never to dispute the sporting achievements of the teams but rather to seek adherence to the competition regulations.
The FRMF reiterated their dedication to upholding the integrity of the competition and expressed their appreciation for all nations that participated in this significant AFCON edition. They announced plans to make an additional statement on Wednesday, following discussions among their officials.
This ruling on the AFCON 2025 final not only alters the outcome of this prestigious tournament but also emphasizes the importance of regulation adherence in maintaining fair play within African football.
