Leeds Striker Joel Piroe Set for World Cup Opportunity with Suriname After Nationality Switch
Leeds United forward Joel Piroe is poised to make his debut for Suriname’s national team in the upcoming World Cup playoff, following the recent approval from FIFA to change his national allegiance. Piroe, who previously played for the Netherlands under-19 squad, has been officially named in Suriname’s 26-man roster for their inter-confederation playoff semi-final scheduled against Bolivia on March 26 in Monterrey.
If Suriname manages to triumph over Bolivia, they will face Iraq on March 31 at the same venue, with the victor earning a coveted spot in the World Cup to be held in Canada, Mexico, and the United States this coming June. This marks a historic opportunity for Suriname as they aim for their inaugural qualification for the World Cup.
The Suriname team, notably comprised of players with Dutch heritage linked to the South American country, arrives at this crucial match under the guidance of new head coach Henk ten Cate. Ten Cate steps in following the resignation of Stanley Menzo, who departed after their unsuccessful attempt to qualify directly during last November’s CONCACAF preliminaries.
The playoff winners will enter Group I at the World Cup, where they will compete against formidable opponents including the former world champions France, Norway, and Senegal.
Joel Piroe’s recent performance in the Championship was noteworthy; he enjoyed a successful season with Leeds, netting 19 goals. Despite his impressive stats, he had anticipated a call to the Dutch national team but, after not receiving that opportunity, he opted to represent Suriname, a decision influenced by his father’s roots from the Caribbean country.
