Orebro and Malmo Force Deciding Games in SHL Playoffs

In a dramatic turn of events during the 2025/26 Swedish Hockey League (SHL) playoffs, both Orebro and Malmo have leveled their eighth-final series, setting the stage for decisive matches that will determine which teams advance. This weekend’s showdowns are poised to be a thrilling climax to the opening round of the playoffs.

Orebro’s Resurgence Against Lulea

After suffering a substantial 6-2 defeat in their first playoff matchup, Orebro, who finished the regular season in 10th place, was on the brink of elimination. However, they stunned the reigning champions, Lulea, by coming back strong to secure a 3-1 victory in their second match. The win was particularly significant, as it not only evened the best-of-three series at 1-1 but also provided Orebro with a renewed sense of hope.

The match commenced with a tense first period devoid of goals, but the tension escalated as Orebro seized upon their opponent’s mistakes. A pivotal moment occurred when Lulea’s Oskari Laaksonen was penalized for tripping late in the second period, granting Orebro a power play opportunity. Kalle Kossila capitalized on this chance, striking to put Orebro ahead.

Key Moments of Intensity

As the match progressed, the intensity boiled over, resulting in penalties for both teams by the end of the second period. Lulea managed to equalize early in the final period through Anton Levtchi, putting the pressure back on Orebro. Yet, Kalle Miketinac emerged as Orebro’s hero, regaining the lead and subsequently securing victory with another goal, forcing a decisive third game to take place at Coop Norrbotten Arena on March 21.

Malmo Bounces Back Against Djurgarden

In parallel, Malmo faced a tough first game, losing 3-2 to Djurgarden. However, they turned the tables in the second match, emerging victorious with a 2-1 score. The Redhawks initiated their comeback just two and a half minutes into the match when Filip Bjorkman netted the opening goal. Despite a disallowed goal by Fredrik Handemark shortly after, Malmo maintained their momentum.

The game was marked by growing tensions, culminating in multiple penalties for fighting towards the end of the first period. Djurgarden threatened to capitalize on Malmo’s failure to extend their lead when Jacob Josefson scored with 11 minutes remaining. Nonetheless, William von Barnekow-Lofberg, who had previously assisted, stepped up to score, clinching the game for Malmo and setting the stage for a third and final match.

Upcoming Decisive Matches

Both Orebro and Malmo will need to bring their A-game in the deciding matches this weekend. With both teams having fought hard to level their series, the next round promises a tense atmosphere filled with high stakes and playoff intensity. Fans and players alike will undoubtedly be eager to see which teams will prevail and advance in the SHL playoff race.
