Magnus Cort Achieves First World Tour Victory in Two Years
Magnus Cort, the Danish cyclist, achieved a remarkable comeback by winning the second stage of the 2026 Volta a Catalunya. This victory marks his first win of the year and his first at World Tour level since he claimed triumph at the 2024 Criterium du Dauphiné.
A Tactical Stage Favoring Sprinters
The stage was predominantly controlled by the INEOS Grenadiers and the NSN Cycling Team during an otherwise flat section, which provided an ideal setting for the sprinters to showcase their speed and skill throughout the week.
A Thrilling Finish
Cort seized his moment in a dramatic sprint finish, where he outpaced his competitors in the final meters. Noah Isidore and Francesco Busatto finished second and third, respectively, highlighting the intense competition during the concluding moments of the race.
Cort Reflects on His Victory
In a post-race interview with TV2 Sport, Cort expressed his elation, saying, “It’s fantastic. It’s something I’ve dreamed of, but it wasn’t easy. It’s cool, and I didn’t have much faith in it myself, and I sat too far back.” Cort credited his teammate Anders Skaarseth for his support during the race, explaining how they managed to navigate through the crowd to secure the win.
The Challenge of the Final Sprint
He added, “It was a disgustingly hard final for everyone. Anton Charmig was a little too far ahead, and I had to yell at him. He opened the sprint, and I could follow. But I didn’t have much energy left in my legs in the last 200 meters.” Cort’s candid reflection on the race highlights both the physical and mental challenges that cyclists face during such high-stake competitions.
