Suspended Sentence for Racist Online Posts Targeting England’s Jess Carter

A man aged 60 has been handed a suspended jail sentence after posting racist comments about Jess Carter, an England women’s footballer, during last year’s UEFA Women’s Euro Championship held in Switzerland. The individual, identified as Nigel Dewale, shared two derogatory posts on his TikTok account under the username “Bogeyman” amidst the tournament.

In his inflammatory messages, Dewale made heinous remarks suggesting that individuals with darker skin tones were involved in criminal activities, using terms like “murderers” and “groomers” to describe them. Following an investigation, the posts were traced back to him, leading to his arrest and subsequent charges.

At Blackburn Magistrates’ Court in northwest England, Dewale was sentenced to six weeks in prison, which has been suspended for a period of 12 months. He previously pleaded guilty to sending a grossly offensive message via a public communications network at an earlier hearing.

Jess Carter, now 28 years old, is a defender formerly associated with Chelsea and currently plays for Gotham FC in the United States. She was a vital member of the Lionesses squad that successfully defended their title at the European Championship, reflecting her significant contributions to women’s football at both domestic and international levels.
