CORINTHIANS APPOINT FORMER BRAZIL INTERIM COACH DINIZ AFTER SACKING DORIVAL

Reuters reports that Corinthians has made a significant managerial change by appointing Fernando Diniz, previously an interim coach for the Brazil national team, following the dismissal of Dorival Junior. This decision comes in the wake of a disappointing eight-match winless streak across all competitions, as announced by the Brazilian club late on Monday.

Dorival, who also has experience as a coach for the Brazil national team, was let go after the team’s home defeat against Internacional, where they lost 1-0. This result left Corinthians struggling in 16th place in Brazil’s Serie A, a precarious position only two points above the relegation zone, highlighting the urgent need for a turnaround in form.

Fernando Diniz, who is no stranger to the club as he had a brief playing career with Corinthians, previously achieved notable success as the head coach of Fluminense. Under his guidance, Fluminense clinched the Copa Libertadores title in 2023 and went on to win the Recopa Sudamericana in the following year. However, his stint as Brazil’s interim coach was short-lived; he was at the helm for six months before being removed from his position in January 2024, subsequent to Brazil’s unexpected defeat by Argentina in a World Cup qualifier on home soil.

Looking ahead, Corinthians is set to face Argentine side Platense on Thursday in the Copa Libertadores, a match that will be crucial for the team as they seek to improve their current form under the new management of Diniz.
