Ma’a Nonu Receives Three-Week Ban for Dangerous Tackle
In a recent ruling by the governing body of European rugby, former New Zealand international Ma’a Nonu has been handed a suspension of three weeks following an incident deemed “dangerous” during a Champions Cup match over the weekend. Nonu, who plays for RC Toulonnais, was penalized for a high tackle on Wandisile Simelane of the South African team Stormers in a closely contested match that ended with a score of 28-27.
The tackle, which resulted in a yellow card for Nonu, drew scrutiny post-match, leading to his citing. In response to the disciplinary proceedings, Nonu acknowledged that his conduct warranted a red card. The European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR) subsequently confirmed that the committee upheld the citing complaint, categorizing Nonu’s tackle as dangerous and meeting the mid-range criteria of World Rugby’s sanction framework. Initially facing a six-week suspension, Nonu’s sentence was halved due to his contrition and commendable disciplinary history.
As a result of this ruling, Nonu will be absent from Toulon’s quarter-final clash against Glasgow Warriors scheduled for this weekend. However, he is expected to make his return to the playing field on April 27, when Toulon faces off against French champions Toulouse in a pivotal Top 14 match.
