CONMEBOL EXTENDS SUPPORT FOR FIFA PRESIDENT GIANNI INFANTINO’S REELECTION BID

The South American football governing body, known as CONMEBOL, has officially endorsed Gianni Infantino as he considers the possibility of seeking a fourth term as FIFA president. This backing comes even though Infantino has not yet confirmed his intentions for the 2027-2031 presidential term.

In a statement released on Thursday, CONMEBOL’s council expressed unanimous support for Infantino’s leadership, highlighting his contributions to the development of South American football as well as his impact on a global scale. Alejandro Dominguez, the president of CONMEBOL, acknowledged Infantino’s dedication and thanked him for his ongoing involvement in advancing the sport across the region and worldwide.

“President Gianni Infantino, thank you for your continued commitment to the development of South American football and for the leadership exercised at a global level,” Dominguez stated. He emphasized the federation’s appreciation for Infantino’s vision and connection to South America’s footballing community.

This endorsement makes CONMEBOL the first football federation to officially express support for Infantino’s potential re-election. Since taking office in 2016, following the departure of Sepp Blatter, Infantino has been re-elected unopposed in 2019 and again in 2023.

Under Infantino’s leadership, FIFA competitions have seen significant expansions, including the upcoming World Cup in North America, set to be the first featuring 48 teams. Similarly, the 2023 women’s World Cup has expanded to include 32 teams, demonstrating Infantino’s commitment to growing the sport internationally.

Nonetheless, Infantino’s presidency has not been without controversy, facing criticism centered around governance issues and the congestion of the football calendar. As the landscape of global football continues to evolve, the outcome of Infantino’s potential re-election remains to be seen.
