Villarreal Triumphs Over Athletic Club, Securing Significant LaLiga Victory

In a highly anticipated match, Villarreal demonstrated their dominance by defeating Athletic Club 2-1 at San Mames, marking their first league double over their rivals since the 2010/11 season. The weekend was themed with LaLiga clubs donning retro kits, and Villarreal capitalized on this nostalgic atmosphere to secure a crucial win that pushes them four points clear in the battle for third place.

Athletic Club’s dynamic winger, Nico Williams, made his much-awaited return to the starting lineup after a two-month injury hiatus. However, it was Villarreal that threatened first, with their striker Pape Gueye forcing a great save from goalkeeper Unai Simon in the 11th minute, as he tipped the ball over the crossbar.

The visitors broke the deadlock 26 minutes into the match. Tani Oluwaseyi, impressive in his role, sent an exquisite cross to Serge Cardona, who skillfully lobbed the ball over Simon to notch his first goal since August 2024. Villarreal’s history this season showed that they had not lost after scoring first in LaLiga, with an impressive record of 16 wins and 3 draws.

Athletic Club rallied in response, creating several opportunities, particularly through Yuri Berchiche and Mikel Jauregizar, both of whom narrowly missed the target from the edge of the area. However, just before the halftime whistle, disaster struck for the hosts. Alfon Gonzalez made a decisive run, intercepting a pass from Inigo Ruiz de Galarreta before racing clear and slotting home his first goal since joining on loan from Sevilla in January.

The second half began with Athletic seeking to claw back the deficit, applying early pressure but failing to test Villarreal’s goalkeeper Luiz Junior significantly. Villarreal opted to absorb pressure and counter-attack, nearly extending their lead when Gonzalez dragged a shot wide from a promising position.

As the clock approached the 84th minute, Athletic Club managed to pull one back through their top scorer, Gorka Guruzeta, who blasted home his 14th goal of the season from close range. This gave the home side a flicker of hope, but Villarreal quickly responded with Nicolas Pepe, who thought he had restored the two-goal lead only for VAR to rule the goal out due to an offside in the build-up.

Despite the disallowed goal, Athletic Club could not leverage this turn of fortune to close the gap to seventh place, leaving them in a precarious position having failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 15 LaLiga matches. Conversely, Villarreal’s victory solidifies their position in third place in LaLiga, edging them closer to securing a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League, even though this was only their second away win in the last eight matches.

Sergi Cardona earned the title of Flashscore Man of the Match for his pivotal role in Villarreal’s latest success. As both teams gear up for upcoming fixtures, Villarreal’s momentum could make a significant difference in their ongoing campaign.
