Liiga Playoffs: Nikkanen’s Hat-Trick Propels SaiPa into the Semi-Finals
In a gripping showdown, Henri Nikkanen emerged as the star of the match, netting a hat-trick that secured SaiPa’s victory over Assat, advancing them to the semi-finals of the Liiga playoffs. This decisive game, held in Lappeenranta, culminated with a 4-2 win for SaiPa, following a thrilling contest that went to a game-seven decider. After finishing as runners-up in the previous season, SaiPa joined prominent teams such as Tappara, KooKoo, and Ilves in the next stage of the playoffs.
The clash had been set up after Assat, having claimed a 5-1 win in game five, initially appeared to have the upper hand. However, SaiPa rallied back in game six with a solid 3-1 away victory, turning the series back in their favor and leading to a highly anticipated final match.
Utilizing their home advantage, SaiPa came out strong, dominating the first period with three unanswered goals. The scoring opened in the ninth minute when Patrik Siikanen’s attempt was saved, but Brian Kramer was quick to capitalize on the rebound. Just a minute later, after Assat’s Pater Tiivola was penalized for high-sticking, Nikkanen scored his first powerplay goal, pushing the score to 2-0. Assat’s struggles with discipline continued, as Feetu Knihti was penalized again, allowing Nikkanen to strike again, this time doubling his tally and widening the gap to 3-0.
Despite their rough start, Assat managed to regroup and pull one back at the 20-minute mark of the second period, with Roope Talaja scoring on a rebound, igniting a spark of hope for the visiting team. Nevertheless, within minutes, SaiPa restored their three-goal lead; Nikkanen secured his hat-trick during another powerplay opportunity, bringing the score to 4-1.
In a final push, Jan-Mikael Jarvinen added another for SaiPa, though Assat would score again, making it 4-2, but it wasn’t enough to turn the tide. After a tightly contested match, SaiPa sealed their spot in the semi-finals, maintaining composure to ensure the victory.
As the playoffs progress, SaiPa, as the third seed, is set to face KooKoo, while the other semi-final will feature a fierce battle between Tappara and Ilves in what promises to be an exciting best-of-seven series, starting on April 16.
