10-Man Toulouse Hang On for Win as Lyon Drop Out of Champions League Places

Toulouse inflicted a significant blow on Olympique Lyonnais’ aspirations to secure a top-three finish in Ligue 1, claiming a hard-fought 2-1 victory that brought an end to Lyon’s impressive streak of four consecutive wins. Despite having little left to contend for as the season approaches its climax, Toulouse demonstrated a spirited performance, taking an early lead within the first 10 minutes of the match.

The opening goal came from a brilliant assist by Yann Gboho, who delivered a perfectly weighted pass to Dayann Methalie. With skillful precision, Methalie finished past Lyon’s goalkeeper, Dominik Greif, setting the tone for the match. Lyon quickly sought to respond, nearly equalizing moments later when Afonso Moreira made a powerful run down the left, but his header, aimed at teammate Khalis Merah, went wide of the post.

Lyon continued to apply pressure with several attempts at goal, including a notable run from Endrick, who carved through the defense only to see his shot hit the side netting. As the first half drew to a close, Toulouse nearly extended their lead. Gboho initiated a counterattack but Santiago Hidalgo’s shot, following an overhit pass, struck the post.

After halftime, Toulouse maintained control of the match, although they struggled to convert their possession into clear scoring opportunities. This proved costly when Lyon drew level with just 20 minutes remaining. A well-placed corner from Endrick was met by the head of Corentin Tolisso, bringing the Lyon captain to 15 goals for the season, marking his most prolific scoring campaign to date.

The equalizer was short-lived, though. Just eight minutes later, Toulouse regained their lead through Warren Kamanzi, who capitalized on a clever reverse pass from Hidalgo. The tension escalated as the match entered its final stretches, particularly when Toulouse’s Aron Donnum received a second yellow card, reducing his team to ten players.

With the numerical advantage, Lyon pressed hard for another equalizer but Toulouse’s resolute defense, led by Carles Martinez Novell, stood firm. The victory not only secured three crucial points for Toulouse but also raised their hopes for a potential top-half finish as the season winds down, with one game left to play.

In recognition of his stellar performance, Afonso Moreira was named the Flashscore Man of the Match, highlighting Lyon’s struggles despite their attempts to mount a comeback.
