SIX-TIME NBL MVP BRYCE COTTON JOINS BOOMERS FOR WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS
Aaron Murphy reported that Bryce Cotton, a remarkable 33-year-old guard born in Arizona, is set to don the Australian national basketball team jersey as he joins the Boomers for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers. Cotton had recently celebrated a victory with Adelaide during the NBL Finals, showcasing his talent on a significant platform.
After facing a long and frustrating process regarding his citizenship application, Cotton finally received his Australian citizenship in September 2025. This milestone came after a tumultuous journey that included a ruling in June 2023 which deemed him ineligible for citizenship due to a minor technicality: a 30-minute period in 2021 when he landed in Melbourne while his application for a Distinguished Talent Visa was still under review.
Cotton’s bone of contention dates back to 2019 when he first applied for citizenship with aspirations of representing Australia at the 2022 Tokyo Olympics. He expressed his frustration about the delay multiple times, stating, “I’m in a hole because of 30 minutes which is ridiculous… I don’t understand why they’re making sure they’re keeping me from having citizenship. It doesn’t make any sense.”
In January 2024, while he was with the Perth Wildcats, Cotton had explicitly stated his disinterest in representing Australia at that time, largely attributed to the prolonged frustrations with the citizenship process. However, following the attainment of his citizenship, he has completely shifted his perspective and is now eager to represent his adopted country.
Head coach Adam Caporn, along with assistant coach Dean Vickerman, who previously coached Melbourne United, recognized his potential and successfully recruited Cotton to join the national team. His debut will take place at Perth’s RAC Arena, a venue where he made a significant impact during his nearly decade-long tenure with the Wildcats, when Australia faces Guam in the qualifiers for the 2027 FIBA World Cup.
In an official statement from Basketball Australia, Cotton expressed profound appreciation for the opportunity: “Representing the Australian men’s national basketball team for the first time is something I don’t take lightly. Coming from where I come from, this opportunity means a lot to me and my family.” He acknowledged the warm embrace he has received from Australia, expressing excitement about wearing the national colors alongside “a great group of guys.”
Basketball Australia executive Jason Smith voiced his anticipation regarding Cotton’s contribution to the Boomers. “We feel like he’s a great cultural fit and obviously he has a dynamic playmaking ability which has been on display with his performances at the elite level over the last decade. We believe he’ll suit the physicality of the international format, and the July window in Perth will give us a solid look at how he integrates to the FIBA game,” he remarked.
