SOUTH AFRICA STUNS FAVORED SENEGAL TO CLAIM OPENING WIN IN 2026 U-17 AFRICA CUP OF NATIONS
In a remarkable display of resilience, South Africa triumphed over Senegal with a score of 2-1 in their inaugural match of Group D at the 2026 Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations, held in Rabat, Morocco, on Thursday. This victory not only serves as a significant boost for the Amajimbos but also enhances their prospects for advancing past a formidable grouping that includes Algeria and Ghana.
A FIERCE CONTEST UNFOLDS
Throughout the first half, South Africa struggled to assert themselves, finding themselves on the back foot as they faced Senegal, the 2023 champions. The initial half concluded with a disappointing scoreline of 1-0 in favor of Senegal, following multiple missed opportunities from both sides. The goal came from a corner, where Cheikh Thior netted a header, capitalizing on a delivery from Sega Mbodji, despite South Africa’s defensive shortcomings.
SOUTH AFRICA’S IMPRESSIVE SECOND HALF
After the break, the dynamics shifted dramatically. Under the guidance of coach Vela Khumalo, South Africa showcased a revitalized performance. In a span of just 10 minutes, they turned the tide with two goals, showcasing their determination to overcome their initial setbacks. Aphelele Majola’s visionary through ball set up Inganathi Simama, who expertly slid the ball past Senegal’s keeper Assane Sarr, leveling the score at 1-1.
Shortly afterward, the momentum continued to surge in South Africa’s favor as a long-range effort from Reotshepile Malete took a fortunate deflection off Thior, wrong-footing Sarr and finding the net to give South Africa a crucial 2-1 lead.
A NARROW ESCAPE FOR SOUTH AFRICA
Senegal desperately sought an equalizer, and in a moment that nearly turned the tide back in their favor, Cheikh Dieng unleashed a phenomenal shot from 35 yards out. However, this potential goal was overturned due to an offside in the build-up, allowing South Africa to exhale in relief.
LOOKING FORWARD
South Africa’s next challenge lies in their upcoming match against Algeria on Sunday, followed by a decisive clash with Ghana on Wednesday. Historically, South Africa has reached the quarter-finals in the last two editions of this tournament but will strive to improve upon their fourth-place finish in 2005 and runner-up status in 2015. In total, this marks their sixth appearance at the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations.
