Seamus Coleman to Conclude Everton Career After Current Season
Seamus Coleman, the long-serving captain of Everton Football Club, has announced that he will bring his distinguished playing career to a close at the end of the ongoing season. After 17 years with the Merseyside club, Coleman has made an impressive total of 433 appearances, with a record 372 of those coming in the Premier League.
At 37 years old, the right-back joined Everton from Sligo Rovers in 2009 and has faced significant challenges in recent years due to injuries, managing to participate in only 23 matches over the last three seasons. Despite this, his impact on the team and the fanbase has been profound, as he has captained the squad 140 times, showcasing his leadership skills on and off the pitch.
Upon announcing his retirement from playing, Coleman reflected on his journey, stating, “Coming over here as a 20-year-old from Sligo Rovers to a reserve team, I was just hoping to impress enough to get on the bench.” His statement underlined the remarkable nature of his career progression, expressing gratitude for the opportunities he has had while representing Everton.
The club has extended an offer for Coleman to continue his association with Everton in a coaching capacity, although he has yet to make a definitive decision about his future path. He highlighted the club’s unwavering support throughout his tenure, remarking, “The club have been unbelievable with me. They’ve offered me an opportunity to stay on at the football club.”
As he prepares to take some time off to contemplate his next steps, Coleman acknowledges the importance of this decision, stating, “I think with it being such an important decision over my future, I’m going to take a nice, long holiday and look back on what has been an amazing time as an Everton footballer.”
