Spain’s Fermín López Ruled Out of World Cup Due to Metatarsal Fracture
Barcelona forward Fermín López will not participate in the upcoming World Cup, as confirmed by Spain’s head coach Luis de la Fuente. The talented player suffered a metatarsal injury during a match over the weekend, which has raised concerns for the European champions, Spain.
López has emerged as one of the key figures in the national team setup. He enjoyed a remarkable season with FC Barcelona, securing LaLiga titles, but now faces a significant setback as he will miss the tournament scheduled to take place in North America.
During the recent clash against Betis, López was forced off the pitch at half-time following an impact to his foot. The subsequent medical report from Barcelona revealed a fracture in the fifth metatarsal of his right foot. This injury necessitates surgery and is expected to sideline him for approximately six to eight weeks, eliminating any chance of him participating in the World Cup.
Coach De la Fuente is expected to announce the final roster of 26 players who will represent Spain this coming Monday, May 25th.
López, a native of El Campillo, was not only a European champion but also an Olympic gold medalist, and he had earmarked this World Cup as a crucial event in his ambitions to secure an international treble. Unfortunately, his dreams of competing on this prestigious stage will have to wait until the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
