Alcaraz Withdraws from Wimbledon Due to Ongoing Injury Issues
Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz, the two-time Wimbledon champion, has announced that he will not participate in this year’s tournament as he continues his recovery from a wrist injury. His hopes of defending his title were dashed on Tuesday when he confirmed his withdrawal.
“My recovery is going well, and I’m feeling much better, but unfortunately, I’m still not ready to play. I am obliged to withdraw from both Queen’s and Wimbledon,” stated Alcaraz, who faced world number one Jannik Sinner in last year’s final.
The 23-year-old expressed his disappointment, saying, “These are two really special tournaments for me, and I’ll miss them a lot. We’ll keep working to come back as soon as possible.”
Alcaraz sustained the wrist injury during the first round of the Barcelona Open. This forced him to withdraw from subsequent tournaments in Madrid and Rome, as well as from Roland Garros, where he was the reigning champion.
This season, Alcaraz has made headlines by becoming the youngest player to complete the career Grand Slam in January with his victory at the Australian Open. His current record stands at an impressive 22 wins and 3 losses, including a title win in Doha.
Missing Wimbledon marks a significant moment as it will be only the third Grand Slam that Alcaraz has missed since he made his main draw debut at the 2021 Australian Open.
His absence impacts the ongoing rivalry with Italian player Jannik Sinner, who is now favored to win both the French Open and Wimbledon.
