Manchester United Youth Player Tyler Fletcher Receives Call-Up to Scotland’s World Cup Squad

In a surprising turn of events, Tyler Fletcher, the promising midfielder from Manchester United’s academy, has been selected to join the Scotland national team for the upcoming FIFA World Cup. This decision comes after the injury of regular player Billy Gilmour, who had to withdraw from the squad. Fletcher’s name was not listed in manager Steve Clarke’s original standby players, making his inclusion noteworthy.

Tyler, the son of former Scotland captain Darren Fletcher, has made a name for himself during training sessions with Clarke’s squad over the past week. The 19-year-old’s ability on the field was showcased when he made his senior international debut in a friendly match against Curacao on Saturday, in which Scotland secured a 4-1 victory.

While Fletcher was not initially among the selected reserve players, he has notably outperformed several junior competitors, including Connor Barron of Rangers, Lennon Miller from Udinese, and Andy Irving from Sparta Prague, who were all part of the reserve list. Coach Steve Clarke expressed his regret over having to inform other potential players that they had missed out, stating, “I just felt Tyler came into the squad this week and showed up really well, did well in the game.” He also expressed sympathy for the injured Gilmour and the omissions of Barron, Irving, and Miller.

As the national team gears up for their World Cup campaign, they are set to depart for the United States on Sunday, where they will continue their preparations. Notably, Scotland has not participated in the World Cup for 28 years, making their upcoming matches particularly significant. Their first match of the tournament will be against Haiti, a moment that is highly anticipated by fans and players alike.
