England’s Djed Spence to Compete with a Protective Mask at the World Cup
In a recent announcement, England defender Djed Spence revealed that he will be taking to the pitch wearing a protective mask at the upcoming World Cup. This decision comes in the wake of a broken jaw sustained during a Premier League clash with Chelsea last month.
Injury Details and Recovery Timeline
The injury occurred after a collision with Chelsea striker Liam Delap, compelling Spence to wear a mask in his final match of the season against Everton. Despite expressing some discomfort, Spence remains focused on his participation in the tournament, stating, “It’s a little bit uncomfortable but it is what it is.” He emphasized the necessity of the mask while acknowledging that his injury will require approximately three months for full recovery.
Resilience on the Field
Reflecting on his performance during the match against Chelsea, Spence conveyed a sense of relief, indicating that his skills on the field are predominantly foot-based, which mitigates his concerns over the jaw injury. “It was painful but luckily I play football with my feet and not my jaw. So I was all good,” remarked the 25-year-old player.
Upcoming World Cup Matches
As England gears up for the World Cup, they will kick off their campaign against Croatia in Dallas on June 17. Following this match, they will also square off against Ghana and Panama in the group stages, adding to the anticipation surrounding Spence’s performance with the protective mask.
