Wataru Endo’s Race Against Time for World Cup Opener
Japan’s captain, Wataru Endo, finds himself in a critical battle to regain his fitness ahead of his team’s opening match in the World Cup against the Netherlands, scheduled for this Sunday. Coach Hajime Moriyasu has expressed his deep concern, stating that he is “praying” for Endo’s recovery.
Foot Injury Complicates Pre-Tournament Preparation
The Liverpool midfielder has been grappling with a foot injury, which kept him out of full training sessions during Japan’s pre-tournament camp held in Mexico. However, upon moving to their World Cup base in Nashville, Endo managed to participate in some running and passing drills with his teammates, sparking hope that he could still make an appearance against the Dutch in Dallas.
Moriyasu Optimistic About Medical Reports
Coach Moriyasu commented on the situation, noting that the latest medical assessments do not indicate any reasons barring Endo from playing. “We simply believe, pray, and await further developments,” he said, emphasizing the uncertainty surrounding the team’s dynamics as they prepare to face formidable opponents in Group F, which also includes Sweden and Tunisia.
Past Injuries and Current Concerns
Endo’s road to recovery follows a season-ending injury he suffered while playing for Liverpool against Sunderland in February. He successfully returned for Japan in a friendly against Iceland, which culminated in a 1-0 victory on May 31st, although he was substituted at halftime due to ongoing discomfort.
Considerations for Squad Adjustments
If Endo is unable to play, Moriyasu has acknowledged the potential need to consider replacements. “I always evaluate the situation for possible substitutions, not just for Endo but for every player on the squad,” he stated. His focus remains on assessing the fitness of several other players who are returning from injuries.
Other Player Absences Due to Injuries
Compounding Japan’s injury woes, Brighton winger Kaoru Mitoma will not participate in the World Cup after suffering a hamstring injury just days before Moriyasu finalized his squad. Additionally, Monaco’s Takumi Minamino is absent due to a significant knee injury sustained from a torn anterior cruciate ligament back in December.
