Thomas Partey Denied Entry into Canada for World Cup Opener Amid Legal Issues
Thomas Partey, a Ghanaian midfielder with a prominent career, including a tenure at Arsenal, has recently faced significant legal challenges leading to his denial of entry into Canada for the opening match of the World Cup. The 32-year-old player has been embroiled in serious allegations, including five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, all filed against him by the Metropolitan Police of London in July 2025.
Despite his plea of not guilty in September of the same year, the situation escalated when he was charged with two additional counts of rape in February of the current year. Again, he maintained his innocence and pleaded not guilty in April. His legal troubles have culminated in his inability to travel with the Ghanaian national team as they prepare for their match against Panama at BMO Field on June 17.
The Canadian government’s official stance on entry refuses individuals with criminal charges, noting that even unconvicted persons might be barred from entry based on the nature of their allegations. Although Partey has not yet been convicted, the charges against him have led to considerable repercussions for his participation in the World Cup.
Ghana’s Head Coach and Association Support Partey
As part of Ghana’s 26-man squad for the 2026 World Cup, Partey has been training with the Black Stars since their camp commenced in late May in Cardiff. During a recent friendly match against Wales, where Ghana drew 1-1, Partey captained the team, showcasing his critical role within the squad. In the buildup to the game, Ghana’s head coach, Carlos Queiroz, expressed confidence in Partey’s selection despite the surrounding controversies.
Queiroz’s comments reflected a broader stance amidst rumors regarding the potential reactions of opposing players towards Partey during the pre-match formalities. “If the player is here with me, my answer is clear. I don’t have any comments about my own decisions. He is here so what are we talking about?” he stated, emphasizing the importance of allowing the judicial process to take its course.
Ghana Football Association’s Stance
In support of their player, the communications director of the Ghana Football Association reiterated their commitment to Partey, affirming unwavering belief in his innocence. “We have absolute confidence in what our player has told us,” he remarked, highlighting their steadfast support despite the legal cloud hanging over Partey.
As the team prepares to depart for Canada on June 15, the absence of Partey necessitates strategic adjustments for Queiroz as they aim for success on the world stage. The outcome of Ghana’s group stage standings may also determine whether Partey could potentially join the team should they progress to the knockout rounds, thereby complicating the situation further.
