Storm Forces Portugal to Cancel Training and Media Activities Ahead of DRC Clash

The Portuguese national football team faced an unexpected setback as a severe storm descended upon Palm Beach, Florida, leading to the cancellation of their planned training session and media activities on Sunday. This disruption occurred just before Matheus Nunes was scheduled to speak to the press, throwing the team’s preparations into disarray ahead of their World Cup 2026 debut against the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Less than an hour prior to the press conference’s commencement, journalists were abruptly informed that they needed to vacate the press room and return to their vehicles for safety reasons. The chosen venue, the Gardens North County District Park, was deemed unsuitable for such inclement weather, raising concerns over the safety of all present.

At 23:00 CET, it was officially communicated to the media that all scheduled activities were canceled and that the national team’s training session, with players already on-site, was at risk due to the ongoing rain and thunderstorms.

In light of these circumstances, the Portuguese Football Federation confirmed the training session led by coach Roberto Martínez was indeed scrapped. As an alternative, players engaged in indoor physical activation exercises to maintain their fitness levels despite the adverse weather conditions.

The team was also required to relocate to a safer place as part of their emergency preparedness procedures, which are designed for situations like this. Subsequently, the planned training schedule was altered, with the squad now set to practice in the morning hours to avoid the worsening weather conditions expected later in the day.

Following these adjustments, it has been arranged for a player to address the media at 14:45 CET, while the rescheduled training session will be open for only 15 minutes and is slated to take place at 16:30 CET.

Portugal is placed in Group K and is set to kick off its World Cup 2026 journey on June 17th against the Democratic Republic of Congo in Houston. Following this, they will face Uzbekistan, also in Houston, on June 23rd, and conclude the group stage with a match against Colombia in Miami on June 27th.

The 2026 World Cup is set to be a historic tournament, running from June 11th to July 19th, hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This edition will feature 48 national teams and will be contested in 16 state-of-the-art stadiums.
