Kristianstad Faces Tough Draw in EHF Champions League
In a highly anticipated moment for handball fans, IFK Kristianstad has learned its opponents as they prepare to return to the EHF Champions League for the 2026/27 season. The draw held on June 26 revealed that the Swedish champions will compete in Group D, going up against formidable teams: Sporting Clube from Portugal, GOG of Denmark, and PICK Szeged from Hungary.
This marks Kristianstad’s first appearance in the prestigious tournament since 2020, a return made possible by the newly expanded format allowing more teams to participate. Previously, during a period where only 16 teams vied for glory, no Swedish team could make their mark. The current competition sees 24 teams divided into six groups of four, providing Kristianstad with a chance to prove their mettle on a grand stage.
The road ahead appears arduous for Kristianstad as all three of their group rivals are seasoned players in the Champions League landscape. Last season, both Sporting Clube and PICK Szeged advanced to the knockout stages, reaching the Quarter-finals—a testament to their strength and experience in high-stakes matches. Sporting Clube arrives as the reigning champions of Portugal, while Szeged and GOG secured second and third places in their respective leagues.
The Champions League action is set to commence on September 9, with the detailed fixture list and throw-off times to be confirmed shortly. As Kristianstad gears up for this challenge, there’s an air of excitement mingled with the weight of expectation.
