Prendergast Named Starting Flyhalf in Leinster-Dominated Ireland XV for Nations Championship

Ireland’s head coach, Andy Farrell, has chosen Sam Prendergast as his starting playmaker for the opening match of the Nations Championship against Australia in Sydney. This decision comes as the team, ranked third in the world, faces its first major test following a commendable performance in the Six Nations, where they finished as runners-up to France.

In preparation for the tour, which also includes upcoming matches against Japan and New Zealand, the Irish squad has been hampered by injuries, leading to the absence of several key players. Skipper Caelan Doris will not be playing, with hooker Dan Sheehan stepping in as the team captain. Additional absences include several loosehead props, such as Andrew Porter, Paddy McCarthy, and Jack Boyle, alongside flyhalf Jack Crowley, who had been a first-choice during the Six Nations.

In response to the injuries, Prendergast will take on the crucial flyhalf role, having been preferred over Harry Byrne, and will work alongside the experienced scrum-half Jamison Gibson-Park. The backline features Hugo Keenan at fullback, with the rapid Rob Baloucoune and Jamie Osborne occupying the wings. In the centre, the reliable duo of Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey hold their positions.

The forward pack sees Tom O’Toole, Dan Sheehan, and Tadhg Furlong making up the front row, while James Ryan and Joe McCarthy will form the second row. Cian Prendergast, Josh van der Flier, and Jack Conan complete the back row.

Notably, Leinster provides a significant contribution to the starting side, with 11 of the starters hailing from the club as well as three additional players named on the bench. Historically, Ireland has been dominated by Australia in their past five encounters, the most recent victory occurring last year in Dublin where Ireland triumphed with an impressive score of 46-19.
