SOUTHAMPTON’S SPYGATE INTERN OFFERED PERMANENT ROLE DESPITE CONTROVERSY

According to reports from the Daily Mail by Mike Keegan, Southampton Football Club has extended a full-time job offer to William Salt, a former intern who became notorious for his involvement in the Spygate incident.

William Salt gained attention when he was caught spying on Middlesbrough ahead of a crucial Championship play-off semifinal that took place in May. As investigations unfolded, several other incidents of espionage involving Southampton surfaced, leading to significant ramifications for the club.

The Spygate incident had serious consequences, resulting in Southampton’s expulsion from the play-off final against Hull City, which Middlesbrough ultimately lost in a nail-biting finish during injury time. Following the incident, Southampton’s owner, Dragan Solak, publicly backed manager Tonda Eckert, who retained his position at St. Mary’s Stadium despite the scandal.

In light of the controversy, it seems Southampton is keen to keep Salt within the organization. He has been offered a role within the club’s academy, as reported by the Daily Mail.

During an EFL Panel meeting, Salt explained that he felt coerced into spying on Middlesbrough, claiming he had received explicit instructions from higher-ups within the club, which left him feeling he had no option but to comply.

WhatsApp messages from December 2025 revealed that Southampton’s surveillance activities were not a one-off occurrence, with Salt receiving messages applauding his efforts, stating, “You legend. Manager loved it.”

The upcoming 2026/27 Championship season for Southampton is set to kick off on August 16th with an away match against Watford.
