Braves Acquire Starting Pitcher Tyler Mahle from Giants
The Atlanta Braves have secured the services of starting pitcher Tyler Mahle from the San Francisco Giants in a trade that took place on Sunday. In exchange, the Giants received relief pitcher Anthony Molina.
Tyler Mahle, now 31 years old, has had a challenging season, recording a 5.13 ERA over 18 starts, alongside 89 strikeouts across 94.2 innings. This performance has seen opposing batters achieve a .265 batting average against him, complemented by a WHIP of 1.39, marking his least effective season since 2018 when he posted a 1.59 WHIP.
On the other hand, Anthony Molina, 24, has had a respectable showing in Triple-A, where he currently holds a 3.78 ERA over 17 games, including nine starts. He enjoyed a brief period in MLB this year, but struggled, yielding three runs on six hits in five innings before being demoted back to the minors.
This trade marks the fifth team transfer for Mahle within a span of five years. He previously dedicated two seasons to the Texas Rangers and had spent one and a half years with the Minnesota Twins, an organization that acquired him from the Cincinnati Reds in 2022.
Mahle’s career in Major League Baseball began in 2017 with the Reds. He reached a high point in 2021, concluding that season with a 3.75 ERA, setting a personal record with 210 strikeouts and leading the league with 32 starts.
Before joining the Giants, Mahle had a standout performance with the Rangers, where he achieved a personal best ERA of 2.18 over 16 starts, despite the limitation of his appearances. Injuries plagued Mahle, as he missed significant time during the 2023 and 2024 seasons due to Tommy John surgery, managing to start only eight games during that period between his tenure with the Twins and Rangers.
