Kgatlana the Hero as South Africa Advance to Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Quarter-Finals
Thembi Kgatlana emerged as the standout player for South Africa, scoring the decisive goal in a tightly contested match against Burkina Faso, leading her team to a 1-0 victory in Casablanca on Tuesday. This win secured South Africa’s place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, setting up a challenging encounter against the host nation, Morocco, in the next round.
In the match, Kgatlana’s first-half strike proved to be the game-winner. South Africa’s performance, coupled with Ivory Coast’s 2-1 victory over Tanzania in another Group B match, saw them finish second in their group, amassing a total of four points. The Ivorians led the group with seven points, while both Tanzania and Burkina Faso ended with three points each.
In the upcoming quarter-finals, South Africa will face Morocco in Rabat on Saturday, while Ivory Coast prepares to meet Algeria in Casablanca on the same day. The stakes are high, as the four teams that make it to the semi-finals will earn spots in the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil. Meanwhile, teams eliminated in the quarter-finals will compete for two intercontinental play-off spots, keeping their hopes alive for a shot at the global finals.
Early in the match, South Africa’s Hildah Magaia had a promising opportunity on the left flank but narrowly missed the net with her attempt. Conversely, Burkina Faso almost found the back of the net when a miscommunication between defenders Karabo Dhlamini and Bambanani Mbane allowed Adama Congo to break free. However, Congo’s effort was thwarted by goalkeeper Kaylin Swart, who made a crucial save in a one-on-one situation.
South Africa created more chances, with Isabella Ludwig heading just wide of the goal before Kgatlana capitalized on a defensive mishap to score in the 21st minute. Noxolo Cesane’s low cross into the box was misplayed by Burkinabe defender Alimata Belem, allowing Kgatlana to sneak in and score from close range, giving Banyana Banyana a 1-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half, a potential penalty for Burkina Faso was overturned after a Video Assistant Referee review showed that Mbane had gotten a touch on the ball first. Opportunities continued to arise for both teams, with Ludwig missing a golden chance to double South Africa’s lead and Amogelang Motau firing wide from a good position as the match progressed.
