Holger Rune Delays Comeback Due to Injury
Holger Rune, the promising Danish tennis player, will not be making his anticipated return at the ATP tournament in Cincinnati as originally planned. This setback comes as a result of an Achilles tendon injury sustained during the Stockholm Open last year. Since October, Rune has been sidelined, and despite his name appearing on the entry list until Wednesday, he has since been removed.
Ongoing Rehabilitation and Future Aspirations
Since his injury, Rune has faced multiple postponements regarding his return to competitive tennis. Initially, there were hopes for his comeback during the Hamburg Open and later at the French Open. Subsequently, he aimed for a return during the grass-court season, but that goal also proved unattainable. Currently, his focus has shifted to being ready for the US Open, scheduled to commence in late August, although uncertainty still looms over this timeline.
Focus on Physical Conditioning
On August 3rd, Rune’s mother and manager spoke to SpilXperten, emphasizing that the primary goal now is to enhance Holger Rune’s tennis stamina. “It could take two or three weeks; it’s impossible to say right now. What we can say is that Holger is putting in maximum effort every day to make it happen quickly,” she stated, underscoring his dedication to recovery.
Background of the Injury
The injury that has kept Rune from competing dates back to a semi-final match last October, where he faced off against French player Ugo Humbert. After the injury, he embarked on an extensive rehabilitation program that included time spent in Qatar to work on recovery and strengthening.
Current Standing in Rankings
As a consequence of his prolonged absence from competitions, Holger Rune has seen a drop in his world rankings, currently sitting at number 99. Nonetheless, due to a “protected ranking,” he remains able to enter major tournaments upon his eventual return to the sport.
