NFL Suspends Falcons’ James Pearce Jr. for Domestic Violence Charges
In a significant disciplinary move, the NFL has announced a suspension for Atlanta Falcons defensive end James Pearce Jr., banning him for the first eight games of the 2026 season due to violations related to domestic violence. This decision follows serious allegations that culminated in three felony charges against the 22-year-old player.
Pearce, who had a standout rookie season making a team-high of 10.5 quarterback sacks, found himself embroiled in legal troubles after an incident in February near Miami. The police intervened during a disturbance involving Pearce and his girlfriend, Rickea Jackson, a player in the WNBA, which led to his arrest.
The charges against Pearce are quite serious and include aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, fleeing from law enforcement, and resisting arrest with violence, in addition to a misdemeanor charge for stalking. Pearce’s legal situation was somewhat alleviated as he agreed to participate in a six-month intervention program earlier in April, with the possibility of his charges being dropped conditioned upon his compliance with the program’s requirements.
His suspension will officially commence on August 30, marking the critical date when NFL teams must finalize their rosters, reducing them to the regular-season cap of 53 players. Despite the suspension, Pearce will still be permitted to engage in pre-season activities with the Falcons during this time.
Should he demonstrate compliance with the outlined terms, Pearce is eligible for reinstatement on November 2, just ahead of the Falcons’ scheduled match against the Cincinnati Bengals on November 8. This suspension marks a crucial moment in Pearce’s early career, as he now faces the challenge of rebuilding his reputation while addressing the serious implications of his actions both on and off the field.
