Viking’s Remarkable Comeback Against Dinamo Zagreb

In an exhilarating encounter during the UEFA Champions League play-off round, Viking FK showcased their resilience by mounting a comeback against GNK Dinamo Zagreb, resulting in a 2-2 draw at the famed Stadion Maksimir. The match was characterized by a thrilling first half where both teams displayed their attacking prowess.

Dinamo Zagreb started the match with intensity, swiftly claiming the lead through Dion Drena Beljo, whose timely finish followed a precise pass from Matteo Perez Vinlof. The opening goal, which came just six minutes into the game, required confirmation from the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) to ensure Beljo was onside.

Only four minutes later, Beljo was once again at the center of the action, intercepting a back pass from Henrik Falchener and playing a clever assist to Mateo Lisica, who capitalized on the opportunity to double the Croatian side’s advantage, making it 2-0 within just ten minutes.

Despite the early setback, Viking began to find their rhythm and mounted a resurgence as the first half progressed. A pivotal moment came when Tobias Moi, with a deft touch, set up Peter Christiansen, who dispatched the ball emphatically into the net, providing Viking with much-needed hope before the half-hour mark.

With their confidence restored, the Norwegians equalized six minutes before the break, thanks to another assist from Moi, this time to captain Zlatko Tripic. Tripic executed a composed finish off the inside of the far post, bringing the score to 2-2 and leaving both teams level heading into the second half.

As the second period commenced, the intensity remained high, with Mario Kovacevic’s Viking seeking to capitalize on their momentum. However, the first notable chance fell to Dinamo’s Luka Stojkovic, who unfortunately missed the target after connecting with a cross from Sergi Dominguez.

Though Dinamo maintained superior ball possession, Viking’s defense held strong, keeping Arild Ostbo largely untroubled until a significant moment in the 73rd minute, where Ostbo was forced into action, making a crucial save from a powerful effort by Mislav Orsic.

Viking, now pushing for a late winner, nearly took the lead when Gianni Stensness narrowly missed connecting with Christiansen’s well-placed cutback. Despite Dinamo applying pressure late in the game with two promising opportunities, neither team could find the net, resulting in a balanced tie that leaves much at stake for the return leg in Stavanger.

Highlights from the match included standout performances by Dion Drena Beljo, who was named Flashscore’s Man of the Match for his impactful contributions. Both teams displayed fighting spirit, promising an exciting second leg as they vie for a spot in the prestigious Champions League.
