Van Dijk Calls for Redemption After Liverpool’s Disappointing Season
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has publicly urged his teammates to rectify their “unacceptable” performances from the previous 2025/26 season, in which the club finished a lackluster fifth in the Premier League and failed to secure any trophies. The season ended dramatically with the dismissal of manager Arne Slot, following an overall disappointing campaign.
In stark contrast to their success just one year earlier, when they claimed the English title, Liverpool faced numerous setbacks. The team suffered 19 losses out of 56 matches played across all competitions, with 12 losses occurring within their 38 league games – a staggering number that matched the total losses they had recorded in the preceding three seasons combined. Furthermore, they were ousted in the quarter-finals of both the Champions League and FA Cup and did not progress beyond the fourth round of the League Cup.
The situation seemed to deteriorate further as tensions between manager Slot and star player Mohamed Salah escalated, with Salah alleging that he was unfairly blamed for the team’s struggles. Determined to move beyond last season’s disappointments, Van Dijk is focused on fostering a spirit of resilience and unity within the squad for the upcoming season. “Last year was unacceptable. This year we have an opportunity to turn that around,” Van Dijk declared. He acknowledged the daunting nature of the task ahead but expressed confidence in the team’s readiness to embrace the challenge.
“What I feel at the moment is everyone is up for the challenge. Let’s see how we go about it. I’m really looking forward to this season, and I don’t think we have a point to prove to anyone,” he added, emphasizing the need for the players to demonstrate their commitment to the club and its supporters. “We have to show how much we care, how much we want to fight for this badge and also realize how privileged we are to be playing for Liverpool.”
In a bid to rejuvenate the team’s energy and style, former Bournemouth coach Andoni Iraola has been appointed to restore the high-octane football that characterized Liverpool’s past successes under different management. The summer transfer window has resulted in significant changes, as key departures include Salah, Ibrahima Konate, and Andrew Robertson, while additions like Spain winger Victor Munoz and Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet have joined the squad, with Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo arriving on loan.
Van Dijk highlighted the necessity of improving player fitness to avoid the injury issues that marred their last season. He referenced Iraola’s observations from pre-season, noting that the players were presently fit enough to sustain high intensity for only 30 minutes of gameplay. “If you look at Bournemouth last year, I think they were pretty exciting. I would say if we keep working, keep believing, and keep showing our quality, then we can be very excited,” he remarked on the potential for a revitalized playing style under Iraola’s guidance.
Ultimately, Van Dijk emphasized the need for a fit and competitive squad capable of challenging on all fronts and expressed hope for the final weeks leading up to the transfer window. “Let’s see what the last couple of weeks of the transfer window will bring and then let’s go for it,” he concluded, looking ahead with determination as Liverpool prepares for the new season.
