Danish International Makes Comeback for Kiel After 330 Day Injury Nightmare
After an arduous journey of rehabilitation lasting 330 days, Emil Madsen, the talented Danish international handball player, took to the court once more. His much-anticipated return coincided with THW Kiel’s preparation match against Hungarian side Pick Szeged, held at the MERKUR Ostseehalle. This event drew in a lively crowd of 6,700 spectators who bore witness to Madsen’s comeback.
Having gone through the trials of a severe knee injury and subsequent surgery, Madsen’s recovery process was both taxing and lengthy. With nearly eleven months having elapsed since his last competitive appearance for THW Kiel back in September 2025, the 25-year-old backcourt player was finally ready to rejoin his teammates.
During the season-opening event, Madsen made his entrance into the game in the 26th minute, greeted with a rousing cheer from the crowd. His impact was immediate; he scored twice, bringing the score to 19-13 and later 20-14. These goals were not only pivotal for the game but also symbolized his hard-fought return to the sport he loves. As the match drew to a close, Madsen added two more goals, radiating joy alongside the hundreds of young fans who had gathered for an autograph session following the match.
“It was just a friendly match, but it was incredibly fun to play again. Just being back out there has filled me with happiness!” he expressed, reflecting the overwhelming emotions of his return.
THW Kiel’s next challenge will be their first official league match against TBV Lemgo Lippe, scheduled for Thursday, August 27, as they begin the campaign with hopes of a successful season.
