Aarhus Coach Reacts to Disappointing Champions League Performance
In the wake of a disheartening 1-4 loss to Lech Poznan during the Champions League qualifiers, AGF’s head coach, Jakob Poulsen, expressed deep concerns regarding the defensive lapses displayed by his squad. This match, held on a Tuesday evening, marked a challenging start for the team in their pursuit of qualification.
During a post-match interview, Poulsen highlighted his surprise at the poor level of play from the defenders, noting that such mistakes had not surfaced during the summer’s friendly matches leading up to this critical fixture. “What worries me is that we performed as poorly as we did today. I don’t think I’ve seen any signs of that coming at any point (of our summer friendlies). It is obviously hugely disappointing—there’s no doubt about that,” he remarked to Viaplay.
Poulsen acknowledged the absence of key defensive players Felix Beijmo and Henrik Dalsgaard, who have not yet been replaced within the squad. Both players had established themselves as pivotal figures in the previous season’s defensive lineup, and their void was keenly felt during the game.
Despite the setback, the Danish champions remain committed to enhancing their roster. Poulsen conveyed confidence in the club’s organizational strategy, indicating that Carsten V. Jensen, the sports director, is actively addressing recruitment needs. “As I’ve said all along, CV is handling things in the background, maintaining good communication with me about what needs to be done. We’re keeping that internal, and now we have players in the squad who need to step up,” he stated.
The second leg of the Champions League qualifying tie between AGF and Lech Poznan is scheduled for next Wednesday, offering the Aarhus side an opportunity for redemption and a chance to advance in the tournament.
