Ajax Shows Interest in Moroccan Midfielder Azzedine Ounahi
Ajax, one of the prominent clubs in the Eredivisie, is reportedly making strides to secure Azzedine Ounahi, the Moroccan midfielder who has recently risen to prominence during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Ounahi, who showcased his talent by scoring twice in Morocco’s impressive 3-0 victory against Canada in the Round of 16, has caught the eye of several top clubs.
The 26-year-old midfielder, currently playing for Girona in La Liga, has a release clause set at €25 million, which is valid until 2030. According to football journalist Fabrizio Romano, Ajax is eager to negotiate a transfer fee with Girona, as the club currently lacks the financial capability to meet the full release clause amount outright.
Moving to Ajax would reunite Ounahi with his former manager at Girona, Michel, who has taken charge of the Amsterdam club since June. If the transfer materializes, Ounahi would be following in the footsteps of Daley Blind, another former Girona player who joined Ajax earlier this summer on a free transfer.
Azzedine Ounahi, who has represented Morocco 55 times, joined Girona in the summer of 2025 after spending two successful years at Olympique Marseille. This move followed his pivotal role in helping Morocco make history as the first African nation to reach the semifinals of the World Cup, significantly elevating his profile in the football world.
In his tenure at Girona, Ounahi participated in 25 matches, contributing five goals and two assists, despite the team ultimately facing relegation from La Liga.
