Algeria Extends Contract of National Team Coach Vladimir Petkovic to 2028

The Algerian Football Federation announced on Sunday that it has officially extended the contract of national team coach Vladimir Petkovic, along with his entire technical staff, until the year 2028. This decision comes just days before the upcoming World Cup in North America, as Petkovic’s previous contract was set to expire immediately after the tournament.

Since taking charge in February 2024, Petkovic has orchestrated a remarkable turnaround for the team, leading Algeria to an impressive record of 21 wins, 4 draws, and only 3 defeats across 28 matches. His leadership has paved the way for Algeria’s qualification for the 2026 World Cup, marking their return to the tournament after missing out on both the 2018 and 2022 editions.

Under Petkovic’s stewardship, Algeria also achieved a significant milestone by reaching the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, a considerable improvement from their earlier exits in the group stage during both the 2021 and 2023 tournaments. Additionally, the national team climbed the FIFA world rankings, rising from 43rd to 28th globally and from seventh to fourth in Africa since Petkovic’s inauguration as coach.

In a statement, the Algerian Football Federation expressed that the contract extension signifies a commitment to “stability and confidence in the work accomplished” by Petkovic and his team. Looking ahead, Algeria is set to kick off their World Cup Group J campaign against Argentina on June 17th, followed by matches against Jordan and Austria.
