Atletico Madrid Secures Morten Hjulmand from Sporting CP
Atletico Madrid has officially announced the signing of Danish midfielder Morten Hjulmand from Sporting CP on a five-year contract, as confirmed by the LaLiga club on Saturday. While the financial specifics of the transfer have not been disclosed by either club, reports indicate that the deal is valued at approximately €40 million (around $46 million), with the possibility of an additional €5 million in performance-related bonuses.
The 27-year-old Hjulmand has an impressive record, having made 141 appearances for Sporting CP since joining the team from Italian club Lecce in 2023. During his tenure, he scored 10 goals and provided 12 assists, highlighting his contribution to the team’s success. He played a pivotal role in leading Sporting to consecutive Portuguese league titles in the 2023/24 and 2024/25 seasons, along with clinching a Taca de Portugal.
On the international scene, Hjulmand has represented Denmark 27 times since making his debut in 2023. He is recognized for his defensive skills, physical presence, and tactical awareness, making him a valuable addition to Atletico Madrid’s midfield strategy.
Hjulmand’s arrival at Atletico follows another high-profile signing this transfer window, as Spanish left wing-back Alex Grimaldo joined the club from Bayer Leverkusen, strengthening Atletico’s roster ahead of the upcoming competitive seasons.
