Celtic Icon Shunsuke Nakamura Joins Japan’s Coaching Staff for World Cup
Shunsuke Nakamura, a legendary figure at Celtic and renowned for his exceptional free-kick abilities, has officially joined Japan’s coaching staff as announced by the Japan Football Association on Thursday. Known for his remarkable skills, especially his curling free-kick against Manchester United during the Champions League, Nakamura’s vast experience as a player will now be pivotal in guiding the Japanese national team.
The JFA confirmed that Nakamura will contribute to head coach Hajime Moriyasu’s team during the World Cup, where Japan finds itself in Group F alongside the Netherlands, Tunisia, and Sweden. In a statement reflecting on his decision, the 47-year-old expressed, “I gave a lot of thought to the impact my involvement might have at this crucial stage, with the World Cup finals just around the corner.” He further noted that a motivational message from Moriyasu encouraged him to accept the position.
Nakamura boasts an impressive international record with 98 caps for Japan, in which he netted 24 goals, and he made his mark at both the 2006 and 2010 World Cups. Having moved to Celtic from Italian club Reggina in 2005, he enjoyed a successful tenure, clinching three Scottish league titles during his four seasons in Glasgow before retiring in 2022. Following his retirement, he transitioned to a role as an assistant coach with Yokohama FC in Japan.
Expressing his commitment, Nakamura stated, “I am committed to sharing the same vision as the Japan players as they compete on the world stage, and I will do everything to help them achieve their goals.” His involvement is expected to bring invaluable insights and a winning mentality as Japan prepares for the global tournament.
