Club Brugge Secures 20th Belgian Title Following Union Saint-Gilloise’s Stumble

On Thursday evening, Club Brugge celebrated a significant achievement by clinching the Jupiler Pro League title for the 20th time in their history. This victory marks their fifth championship win within a span of seven years, following a thrilling 2-2 draw against Mechelen.

Brugge took advantage of a critical mistake made by their nearest competitors, the reigning champions Union Saint-Gilloise, who were held to a goalless draw against Ghent. As a result, Brugge maintained a solid four-point lead with only one matchday remaining in the playoffs.

This championship victory guarantees that the esteemed Flemish club will make its third consecutive appearance in the group phase of the Champions League. In their previous participation, Brugge advanced to the round of 16 in 2025 and this season progressed to the knockout round playoffs, albeit facing elimination at the hands of Atlético Madrid, who would eventually reach the semifinals.

However, the journey to this title was fraught with challenges. The club made a pivotal change by dismissing coach Nicky Hayen on December 8, bringing Croatian Ivan Leko on board from Gent as his replacement.

Club Brugge’s prowess was showcased throughout the season, particularly in their offensive plays. They boasted the most formidable attack in Belgium, netting 59 goals during the regular season and 27 in the playoffs. The club’s success can be attributed to the outstanding performance of its top scorers: Greek forward Christos Tzolis and German striker Nicolo Tresoldi, both of whom contributed significantly by scoring 16 goals each.
