Relegation-threatened Cremonese Appoint Giampaolo as Manager to Replace Nicola
In a decisive move, the Serie A club, Cremonese, has officially appointed Marco Giampaolo as their new manager, following the dismissal of Davide Nicola. The announcement was made on Wednesday, amidst a challenging season for the promoted side, who has experienced a disheartening 15-game winless streak that has relegated them to the lower end of the standings.
Marco Giampaolo, a seasoned manager with a notable history, previously led Cremonese in the third tier back in 2015. His managerial career includes stints at prestigious clubs such as AC Milan, Torino, and Sampdoria in Serie A. Notably, in the previous season, he successfully guided Lecce to a commendable survival in the top flight of Italian football.
Cremonese kicked off their current season with an impressive away victory against AC Milan, boasting a strong opening where they managed to secure seven points from their first three matches. However, the tide turned dramatically as the team suffered 11 defeats in their next 15 matches without securing a single win, leading to their current position three points adrift from safety, sitting third from bottom in the table.
Davide Nicola began his tenure in July under a two-year contract, yet the club’s disappointing performance, highlighted by a recent 4-1 home defeat to fellow relegation candidates Fiorentina, ultimately led to his departure. Following this change, Cremonese’s next challenge will be an away match against Parma scheduled for Saturday, marking an opportunity for Giampaolo to begin steering the club back towards a more competitive trajectory.
