DR Congo Faces Setback as Ebola Outbreak Alters Match Plans

The Democratic Republic of Congo concludes a tumultuous pre-World Cup warm-up series with a disappointing 2-1 loss to Chile. The friendly match, held in Orleans, France, was played behind closed doors as health authorities shifted the venue due to concerns surrounding an Ebola outbreak in Congo.

Initially set to occur in Cadiz, the match was relocated when officials expressed apprehension regarding public health risks linked to the Ebola virus spreading in the central African nation. Consequently, the game transpired without any fans in attendance, reflecting the gravity of the public health crisis.

Following a scoreless first half, Dario Osorio broke the deadlock for Chile in the 52nd minute. The Chilean side solidified their lead with another goal from Matias Sepulveda just four minutes from the end of regular time. Joris Kayembe managed to score for the Congolese team in the 88th minute, but it wasn’t enough to salvage a draw.

As the World Cup approaches, U.S. officials have mandated that players and staff from the Democratic Republic of Congo must remain outside the country for a minimum of 21 days and be symptom-free prior to arrival for the tournament. This guideline underscores the ongoing health concerns that have arisen from the Ebola outbreak.

Congo is scheduled to fly to their tournament base in Houston on Thursday, ahead of their Group K opener against Portugal, set for six days later. Following that match, they are slated to face Colombia in Guadalajara on June 23rd and Uzbekistan in Atlanta on June 27th.
