EURO 92 Hero Kent Nielsen Becomes Assistant Coach of the Danish National Team
Kent Nielsen, the prominent figure in Danish football who played a key role in the national team’s victorious campaign at the European Championship in 1992, has officially been named the new assistant coach of the Danish men’s national team. This announcement comes from the Danish Football Association, which has recognized Nielsen’s extensive experience and achievements in the sport.
In a significant career move, Nielsen will resign from his position as head coach of Silkeborg IF, where he has amassed over 600 matches in the Superliga, showcasing his expertise in managing various clubs, including Horsens, AaB, Brøndby, and OB. The transition to the national team marks a new chapter for the 64-year-old coach, who has signed a two-year contract under the guidance of national team head coach Brian Riemer.
Brian Riemer expressed enthusiasm about Nielsen’s appointment, highlighting his wealth of experience and the complementary offensive mindset they share regarding the game. Riemer articulated that, following the departure of former assistant coach Morten Wieghorst, it was crucial to find a replacement who could not only bring extensive knowledge but also resonate with the team’s intricate dynamics, which Nielsen undoubtedly embodies.
“Kent Nielsen is a great asset who fits perfectly into the team I wanted to assemble with different skills,” Riemer stated, emphasizing that Nielsen’s legendary status within the national team reflects his deep understanding of what it means to don the Danish jersey and represent the country on the international stage.
As Nielsen prepares to take on his new responsibilities, his initial challenge will be Denmark’s upcoming international match in September against Norway in the Nations League, a crucial encounter that sets the tone for the national team’s future aspirations.
