Evenepoel Dominates Time Trial at Tour de France
In a spectacular showing during the Tour de France’s stage 16, Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel delivered a commanding performance in the 26.1 km individual time trial. On a route alongside the scenic Lake Geneva, Evenepoel finished 28 seconds ahead of the reigning champion, Tadej Pogacar, significantly reducing Pogacar’s overall lead to 4 minutes and 32 seconds.
Triumphant Yet Bittersweet Victory
At just 26 years old, Evenepoel’s victory marked his fourth stage win in the Tour and his second consecutive triumph, having also claimed victory on the 15th stage. He expressed immense pride in his achievement, particularly as it coincided with Belgium’s national holiday, making the win even more special. “It’s amazing… a lot of people on the side of the road,” said Evenepoel, who was delighted to have family present to celebrate with him.
Challenges for Teammate Lipowitz
However, the day wasn’t without its challenges. Evenepoel’s teammate, Florian Lipowitz, suffered a serious crash that forced him to withdraw from the race. Up until that point, Lipowitz had been in a strong position, ranking fifth overall and recording impressive times at intermediate checkpoints. Evenepoel voiced his concern, stating, “That’s very unfortunate… I wish him all the best, and I hope it’s not too bad.”
Strategic Execution and Mixed Emotions
Throughout the time trial, Evenepoel demonstrated exceptional skill and control. As he began his ride, it quickly became evident that he was pushing at a different pace compared to his competitors. While Skjelmose initially set a strong time, Evenepoel rapidly distanced himself from both Pogacar and others, showcasing his superior ability, particularly on the uphill segments.

Despite the triumph, there was a sense of mixed feelings within the Red Bull-Bora Hansgrohe team. Sporting director Klaas Lodewyck remarked on the bittersweet nature of the victory, expressing joy for Evenepoel while also recognizing the significant loss of Lipowitz.
