Former Danish International Convicted in Tax Haven Case
Allan Lund Nielsen, a former player for the Danish national football team and a well-known figure at Tottenham Hotspur, has received a conviction related to a case involving tax evasion in a tax haven, which emerged from the infamous Panama Papers scandal of 2016. According to reports from Denmark’s Radio, the Copenhagen City Court has ruled that Nielsen held assets totaling €2.5 million in a company he managed, on which he failed to pay taxes in Denmark. As a result of this decision, Nielsen is required to compensate the Danish Tax Agency with €740,000.
Throughout the judicial process, Nielsen has consistently contested the tax authorities’ claims, labeling them as “alleged and fictitious,” as indicated by statements reported on dr.dk. He argues that the Danish Tax Agency has not provided sufficient evidence to verify that the €2.5 million constituted actual taxable assets.
Allan Lund Nielsen was an active member of the Danish national team from 1995 to 2002 and earned the prestigious title of Danish Footballer of the Year in 1996. His club career included significant stints with English teams such as Tottenham Hotspur and Watford, where he was particularly remembered for netting the decisive goal in the Worthington Cup (now known as the Carabao Cup) final against Leicester City in 1999. This triumph remains a pivotal moment in his sporting legacy.
In a recent turn of events, the former footballer disclosed his plans to relocate back to Dubai, accompanied by his wife, Tina Lund, and their children. This decision marks a new chapter in his life as he navigates the implications of his recent legal troubles.
