QATAR ‘FINALISSIMA’ BETWEEN SPAIN AND ARGENTINA CANCELLED DUE TO CONFLICT

The highly anticipated ‘Finalissima’ match, scheduled to feature European champions Spain and Copa America winners Argentina, has been officially cancelled due to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, as confirmed by UEFA in a statement released on Sunday. The match was set to take place on March 27th at Lusail Stadium in Doha, Qatar.

Following discussions with relevant organising authorities in Qatar, UEFA determined that the escalating political situation rendered it impossible to proceed with the match. In their statement, UEFA expressed profound disappointment, stating, “It is a source of great disappointment to UEFA and the organisers that circumstances and timing have denied the teams of the chance to compete for this prestigious prize in Qatar.”

In addition to the cancellation, UEFA had explored alternative arrangements to salvage the match. However, these proposals were ultimately deemed unacceptable by the Argentinian Football Association (AFA). One suggestion involved hosting the match at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid, allowing for an even split of supporters in attendance. Another option included playing the Finalissima over two legs, with the first leg in Madrid and a second in Buenos Aires during an international window preceding the upcoming Euros and Copa America. Both proposals were rejected by the AFA.

UEFA noted that the AFA suggested postponing the match until after the World Cup, but this proposal was undermined by the fact that Spain had no available dates for such an arrangement. As a result, both teams and their respective football associations now face a missed opportunity to publicly showcase their talents in a high-stakes match, further complicating the already tumultuous sports calendar.
