Finland’s Strong Start in New Zealand Series

In their opening match of the FIFA Series held in Auckland, Finland showcased a dominant performance against New Zealand, securing a 2-0 victory. This marks a commendable beginning for Finland as they embark on their journey towards the 2026 World Cup, demonstrating that the long trip to New Zealand was well worth it.

The match, however, serves as a disappointing start for the New Zealand team, a nation that has been hoping to build momentum ahead of the World Cup. With high expectations, they faced a formidable opponent in Finland, whose recent international actions have been noteworthy.

The Finnish team, under the guidance of coach Jacob Friis, is in a transitional phase, especially following the retirement of their key player Teemu Pukki. In this evolving lineup, 31-year-old Joel Pohjanpalo emerged as a key player, scoring the opening goal by heading in a corner taken by Leo Walta in the first half.

Both teams had their share of opportunities during the match. Notably, Leo Walta nearly doubled the advantage with a spectacular strike from outside the penalty area that hit the crossbar, keeping New Zealand’s hopes alive momentarily.

Finland cemented their win in the closing minutes when Topi Keskinen, who found himself in a challenging position during an attack, made a savvy decision to assist Jaakko Oksanen. Oksanen’s shot was just enough to elude goalkeeper Max Crocombe, sealing a clean sheet for Finland and marking their second consecutive victory without conceding a goal after their previous 4-0 triumph over Andorra to conclude 2025.

Looking ahead, Finland is scheduled to face Cape Verde, again at Auckland’s Eden Park. A win in that match, combined with Chile dropping points against New Zealand, would secure Finland’s position at the top of the four-team series.
