‘FOREVER 20’: DIOGO JOTA AND HIS BROTHER TO BE HONOURED BY LIVERPOOL WITH ANFIELD MEMORIAL
Liverpool Football Club has announced plans to erect a permanent memorial at its iconic Anfield stadium in memory of the late Diogo Jota, a former forward, and his brother, Andre Silva. The duo tragically lost their lives in a car accident last year in northwestern Spain, leaving a profound impact on their family, friends, and the club’s supporters.
The planned memorial will feature a heart-shaped sculpture named “Forever 20,” a tribute that resonates deeply with Jota’s jersey number. In a moment of great significance, the club has opted to retire the number in remembrance of Jota across all teams, including the women’s squad and the academy players.
In addition to commemorating Jota, the memorial will also showcase Silva’s number 30 shirt, which he wore during his tenure with Penafiel in the Portuguese second division. The monument will be situated on a plinth made of Granby Rock-faced stone, which will bear a laser-engraved dedication honoring both brothers. Additionally, the plinth will incorporate various physical tributes left by fans at Anfield, symbolizing the heartfelt connection the supporters had with the two players.
Diogo Jota had a significant impact on Liverpool, contributing to the team’s triumphs, including the Premier League title last season and clinching both the FA Cup and League Cup in 2022, as well as the League Cup again in 2024. Over his career at Liverpool, he netted an impressive 65 goals in 182 appearances, further solidifying his legacy within the club.
In a poignant moment to reflect on his contributions, Liverpool paid tribute to Jota during the pre-match ceremonies of the 2026 Premier League season opener against Bournemouth, holding a minute’s silence in his honour, thus allowing both players to be remembered fondly by fans and players alike on the pitch that has seen many of their memorable moments.
