Former Chelsea Midfielder Oscar Retires at 34 Due to Heart Issues

In a significant turn of events, former Brazil international and Chelsea midfielder, Oscar dos Santos Emboaba Junior, has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 34. The news was confirmed by his current club, Sao Paulo, on Saturday. Oscar’s career came to an abrupt halt following serious cardiac issues that he faced recently.

In November, the midfielder was hospitalized for a troubling five-day period after he fainted during a routine medical examination. Subsequent medical evaluations revealed that he experienced a vasovagal syncope, a condition characterized by a sudden drop in blood pressure, heart rate, and cerebral blood flow. This alarming health concern ultimately led Oscar to make the heart-wrenching decision to step away from the sport he loves.

Reflecting on his career, Oscar stated, “I am ending a career here in Sao Paulo that has taken me practically to the four corners of the world.” Despite the premature conclusion of his playing days, it’s important to note that he had a contract with Sao Paulo that was set to expire in 2027, highlighting the unexpected nature of his retirement.

Throughout his illustrious career, Oscar played for Chelsea over five seasons, during which he achieved considerable success. He was part of the squad that won two Premier League titles and the Europa League, establishing himself as a key player during his time in the English Premier League. In 2017, he made a move to Shanghai Port, where he clinched three Chinese Super League titles.

In 2025, after a fruitful stint abroad, Oscar returned to his roots at Sao Paulo, the club where he began his career. During his time with the Brazilian national team, he earned 48 caps, contributing significantly to Brazil’s victory in the FIFA Confederations Cup and representing his country in the 2014 World Cup hosted in Brazil.

Oscar’s retirement underscores the sometimes unpredictable nature of professional sports, where unforeseen health issues can suddenly alter the trajectory of an athlete’s career.
