Gardner Shines as Australia Dominates West Indies to Reach T20 World Cup Final
In a commanding performance, Ashleigh Gardner emerged as the star of the match, showcasing her skills with both bat and ball, leading Australia to a decisive eight-wicket victory over the West Indies in the semi-final of the Women’s T20 World Cup at The Oval on Tuesday. This triumph secured Australia’s place in the final, allowing them to maintain their unbeaten streak in the tournament as they set their sights on the title match at Lord’s on Sunday.
Chasing a target of just 126 runs, the six-time champions displayed their prowess by wrapping up the game with an impressive seven overs to spare. Gardner’s exceptional bowling saw her take two critical wickets for just 13 runs in her two overs, contributing to a disappointing total of 125 for 7 runs for the West Indies. Following her bowling success, Gardner also delivered with the bat, scoring an unbeaten 35 runs, while her opening partner, Beth Mooney, played a brilliant innings, finishing with 61 not out.
Reflecting on her performance, Gardner remarked, “A bit of momentum always helps. We knew it was going to be a nice wicket, and it’s really pleasing to get the win. I feel like I haven’t had an impact with the ball in this tournament, so to save my best until now was really pleasing.”
The West Indies faced an uphill battle after suffering a rapid collapse, losing four wickets for just 12 runs in the span of 17 balls, leaving them in dire straits at 59 for 4. Their experienced batter, Deandra Dottin, experienced a distressing moment before the match as she fainted while the teams were lining up for the national anthems. Despite this setback, Dottin managed to recover and contribute 26 runs off 16 balls, ensuring her side crossed the 100-run mark.
West Indies captain Hayley Matthews expressed concern over Dottin’s incident, calling her a “massive fighter,” and remarked, “To see her almost passing out after the anthem was a bit scary. It was a bit of a medical emergency, but it shows how much of a fighter she is that she came back out and threw a few punches at the Aussies.”
On Australia’s side, there was a moment of worry when Ellyse Perry retired hurt due to a thigh issue at the end of the seventh over. Nevertheless, captain Sophie Molineux reassured fans that Perry’s condition was not serious, stating, “Just some quad tightness. It sounds like she’ll be more than okay to go on Sunday.” Molineux praised the team’s performance: “I thought we bowled really well. We held our nerve, and then we wanted to get it done as quickly as possible, and Moons and Ash were clinical.”
Despite Perry’s exit, Gardner secured the victory for Australia with a stylish flick for four, confirming their place in the much-anticipated final of the Women’s T20 World Cup.
