Gianni Infantino Confirms Bid for FIFA Presidential Re-Election
On Thursday, Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, announced his intention to seek re-election for a fourth consecutive term. This statement was made during the closing moments of the FIFA Congress held in Vancouver, just weeks ahead of the upcoming World Cup.
Infantino revealed that he would be running for the 2027–2031 term, with the election set to take place on March 18 in Morocco, a nation poised to co-host the 2030 World Cup alongside other countries. Expressing his sentiments, Infantino stated that he felt “honoured and humbled” by the opportunity to pursue another term in his position.
The Italian-Swiss official has been at the helm of FIFA since 2016, taking over from Sepp Blatter. He was reelected unopposed in both 2019 and 2023 due to a perceived lack of challengers at that time. Throughout his tenure, Infantino has advocated for the expansion of FIFA competitions, most notably this year’s World Cup in North America, which will feature 48 teams, along with an expanded women’s tournament set for 2023 that will include 32 teams.
However, his time in office has not been without controversy. Infantino has faced criticism over various issues including the high prices of World Cup tickets and the contentious decision to award the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize to former U.S. President Donald Trump at the World Cup draw in December. This has led to mixed reactions from the soccer community regarding his leadership.
Recently, the council of the South American football governing body, known as CONMEBOL, publicly declared its unanimous support for the 56-year-old Infantino, should he choose to pursue another term. This endorsement reflects a significant backing as Infantino prepares for the electoral process ahead.
