Golden Knights Eliminate Mammoth from Playoffs in Dominant Game 6 Performance

The Vegas Golden Knights secured their place in the next round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs by defeating the Utah Mammoth 5-1 in Game 6 on Friday night. This decisive victory marked their seventh consecutive triumph when leading a playoff series 3-2. Following a challenging stretch where the team’s goaltender, Carter Hart, allowed four goals over three games, he made a strong comeback with 21 saves in this match.

The Golden Knights are set to face the Anaheim Ducks in the second round, who, in a surprising twist, eliminated the reigning Western Conference champions, the Edmonton Oilers, in just six games. Anaheim has proven to be an offensive powerhouse, scoring 26 goals in the first round, while the Golden Knights, alongside the Minnesota Wild, stand at second place with 23 goals.

Game Recap and Highlights

After the Mammoth failed to capitalize on an early power play and 15 minutes into the first period, it was the Golden Knights who opened the scoring. Brett Howden found the back of the net for the fourth time in the series, marking his third consecutive game with a goal, thanks to assists from Mitch Marner and Mark Stone. This goal was significant for Stone as well; it was his 39th playoff point, tying him with Jonathan Marchessault for the third-most in franchise playoff history, only behind Reilly Smith and Shea Theodore, who are the all-time leaders at 51 points.

Should Howden score again in the next game, he would tie Marchessault and Alex Tuch for the longest goal streak in franchise playoff history, with four games. Additionally, Howden achieved his third goal on the road this playoffs, with only Marchessault scoring more on the road in a single playoff series for the Knights.

Following another missed opportunity by the Mammoth in the second period, the Knights extended their lead when Mitch Marner scored his first goal of the playoffs. Marner’s performance was notable as he joined other Golden Knights players, including Max Pacioretty and Paul Stastny, who have at least six points in their first six playoff games.

The Mammoth did manage to score, with Kailer Yamamoto netting his first goal of the series, making it a 2-1 game. This was a resurgence for Utah, as it marked their first shot on goal after an eight-and-a-half-minute drought. However, the Golden Knights quickly responded, sending their fans back into their seats. Colton Sissons scored to increase the lead to 3-1, supported by assists from Brayden McNabb and Kaedan Korczak.

The Knights dominated with a stellar +37 goal differential in the third period of the regular season, the highest in the NHL, underscoring their late-game strength. Just over two minutes after Sissons’ goal, Marner struck again, scoring on a power play to make it 4-1, solidifying the Knights’ commanding lead and pushing the Mammoth closer to elimination.

Jack Eichel provided his eighth assist of the playoffs during this goal, placing him among the top active players still competing in the playoffs. The final goal of the evening came from Cole Smith, who closed the game with an unassisted empty-netter, sealing the score at 5-1 and marking the end of Utah Mammoth’s playoff run.
