HALF-TIME OF WORLD CUP FINAL TO LAST 30 MINUTES, AMERICAN ANTHEM TO BE SUNG
The upcoming FIFA World Cup final is set to feature an unprecedented half-time period lasting 30 minutes, a notable extension from the traditional length. This decision marks a significant evolution in the tournament, as the final will include a grand half-time show headlined by renowned artists including Justin Bieber, Shakira, Madonna, BTS, and Burna Boy, alongside musical delights from Chris Martin of Coldplay, and beloved characters from Sesame Street and The Muppets. This special feature promises an 11-minute performance aimed at entertaining the global audience.
As reported by Martyn Ziegler of The Times, this extended half-time show raises questions, as the Laws of the Game typically only permit a 15-minute break. The referee will need to approve any justification for this extended period. While FIFA aims to limit actual half-time durations to 20 minutes, the governing body has yet to confirm this officially.
British broadcasters, including BBC and ITV, have already adjusted their programming to accommodate this 30-minute break, which will include both the full 11-minute performance and an additional 15 minutes for analysis. This setup allows viewers to fully appreciate the entertainment segment while following the traditional commentary and insights typical of such high-profile matches.
Previous events have hinted at the potential for this kind of show. For instance, last summer’s FIFA Club World Cup final also featured a half-time show with performances from artists like Tems, J. Balvin, and Doja Cat, during which the total half-time duration was recorded at 24 minutes.
NATIONAL ANTHEM AND CLOSING SHOW
Adding further excitement to the occasion, FIFA has confirmed that the national anthem of the United States will be performed prior to the start of the match by acclaimed singer and actress Jennifer Hudson. This moment will set the stage for the highly anticipated match, creating an atmosphere of national pride.
Furthermore, a closing show is scheduled before the final match, which is expected to be a highlight of the event. American actor Tom Cruise will perform alongside notable figures such as Italian singer-songwriter Laura Pausini, American singer and actress Nicole Scherzinger, and English entertainer Robbie Williams, along with YouTube star IShowSpeed. This performance, commencing 90 minutes prior to the final, aims to celebrate the spirit of the World Cup through music and culture.
According to Heimo Schirgi, COO of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the closing ceremony intends to encapsulate the journey of the tournament, which is co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, embodying themes of unity and festivity before culminating in the match that will decide the world champion.
The final match is scheduled to kick off at 21:00 CEST (15:00 local time) on Sunday, July 19th, serving as the pinnacle for a tournament that features teams from around the world and showcases the rich culture of the host nations.
